PM Surya Ghar Yojana 2026: Complete Solar Subsidy Guide for Indian Homeowners

What is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?

Launched in February 2024, PM Surya Ghar is India's largest residential rooftop solar scheme with a total outlay of ₹75,021 crore. The goal: install rooftop solar on 1 crore (10 million) households and provide up to 300 units of free electricity per month.

Subsidy Structure (2026)

System SizeCentral SubsidyYou Pay (Approx.)
1 kW₹30,000₹30,000 - ₹45,000
2 kW₹60,000₹60,000 - ₹90,000
3 kW₹78,000₹1,02,000 - ₹1,32,000
4 kW+₹78,000 (capped)₹1,72,000+

The subsidy is capped at 3 kW for residential users. For systems above 3 kW, the additional capacity is at full cost.

Who is Eligible?

  • Any residential electricity consumer with a valid connection
  • Must own the roof/premises (renters need landlord consent)
  • Only one application per household/electricity connection
  • The system must be installed by an MNRE-empaneled vendor
  • Net metering must be applied for through your local DISCOM

How to Apply: Step-by-Step

  1. Register: Visit pmsuryaghar.gov.in and register with your electricity consumer number
  2. Get feasibility approval: Your DISCOM will verify your rooftop and approve the installation
  3. Choose vendor: Select from MNRE-empaneled installers in your area
  4. Installation: Vendor installs the system (typically 1-3 days)
  5. Net meter: DISCOM installs the bi-directional meter
  6. Commissioning: DISCOM inspects and commissions the plant
  7. Subsidy credit: Subsidy amount is credited directly to your bank account within 30 days of commissioning

State-wise Additional Subsidies

Some states offer additional incentives on top of the central subsidy:

  • Gujarat: Additional ₹10,000/kW for systems up to 3 kW
  • Maharashtra: No additional state subsidy currently
  • Karnataka: Accelerated depreciation benefits for commercial/industrial
  • Tamil Nadu: Check TEDA for current state incentives
  • Delhi: Generation-based incentive of ₹2/unit for 3 years

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't pay the vendor before applying on the portal. The subsidy process requires portal registration first.
  • Don't choose a non-empaneled vendor. You won't receive the subsidy.
  • Don't skip net metering. Without it, you can't sell excess power back to the grid.
  • Don't oversize your system. A 3 kW system covers most homes. Going above 3 kW means no additional subsidy.

Expected Timeline

From registration to installation completion: 30-90 days depending on your DISCOM. Subsidy disbursement: 30 days after commissioning.
